The Secret Commonwealth
I can't put the book down. After such a long wait, seems impossible to stop reading it. I only read His Dark Materials when I was an adult. I guess that if I had read it as a teenager or young adult, I wouldn't take it in as much as I did; however I would like to be a 13 or 15 year old and read something that reassured me that you don't have to follow the church or even believe in it to be a good person. Lyra meant a lot to me while I was reading it. She reminded me of my sister - also a tomboy growing up and loyal to her friends; but also as a role model that I felt was lacking while I was growing up. She is confident, arrogant, self-assured, brave, all the qualities that are usually attributed to male characters. She isn't quiet and clean. Her love evolves slowly and doesn't demand her to change.
